Board Bits

The CVUU Board of directors met Thursday, February 17, 2022. Board meeting minutes are typically available upon request from the CVUU Board Secretary (Suzanne Miles – temporary) or Congregational Administrator (Susie Gullixson), approximately 30 days after the date of the Board meeting. The Board meets every month on Zoom during COVID-19 circumstances. The meeting is usually on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. The meeting is open for congregants to observe. Congregants who want to present something to the Board must notify CVUU Board President Steve Ciganek (ciganeks@gmail.com) prior to the meeting, so it can be included on the agenda. The following is a synopsis of pertinent items. The next Board meeting is March 17, 2022.

CVUU Event Applications Pending – There are currently no event applications pending.

CVUU will resume in-person services at 11:00 AM Sunday, February 27, 2022. Reservations for up to 100 attendees will be taken on the RSVP website, which will be made available on Wednesday, February 23, 2022. This information will also be published in the Weekly Courier.

Elisa Dickon has agreed to fill Suzanne Miles’ Director position through the end of the current fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2022.  Suzanne Miles is completing the current term of Secretary, which was recently vacated by Lauren Furey.

Fiscal Year 2023 Budget – The Board and Finance Committee are finalizing the budget for FY 2023. Pledge income is down, and no fundraisers have been held due to COVID-19 circumstances. This will continue to impact the budget as it has the last several years.

Minister Installation for Reverend Viola Abbitt – The new date for Reverend Viola’s installation is May 21, 2022.

CVUU Playground DRE Paul Greggs made a presentation to the Board of Directors. The playground will be included in the Capital Campaign with the Social Hall. The committee is still investigating total costs, permitting, insurance, Elizabeth River “River Star” requirements, and how to deal with trespassers. The entire playground will be inside the current fence. The sidewalk will need to be moved to accommodate playground equipment. The current plan incorporates picnic tables as well.

Word on the Street – Several congregants have expressed concerns over delaying a return to in-person services. Several congregants have expressed reservations about returning to in-person services during COVID-19 circumstances. The CVUU Board continues to post updates through the Courier, CVUU Web Page, Facebook page, and letters from the President.

The Nominating Committee is composed of Valerie Rottink, Joseph Lock, Linda Smith, Jiffy Shore, and Bruce Powers. The committee is currently seeking qualified congregants to fill the Board vacancies.

CVUU will soon have video cameras installed in the sanctuary and will have the capability to ZOOM services from the sanctuary. Reverend Viola, Steve Ciganek, Doug Throp, and Ellie Fetterly met with the contractors to discuss CVUU requirements. The equipment is on order and installation and training dates will be announced.

The Strategic Planning Team has begun meeting and is in progress.

The Stewardship Committee for Fiscal Year 2023 is Kim Bedinger, David Hutcheson, and Brian Schiller, with Board assistance from Ed Welp and David Howell.

CVUU received a restricted gift of $20,000 for the Green Initiative.

The Finance Committee, David Kidd, David Howell, Russell Rohring, Ed Welp, Anne Odell, Maxine Fetterly, and Tasha Dockery for their untiring work on the budget.

The Worship Services Committee and Tech Team for continued production of virtual Sunday services.

The RE Committee, Paul Greggs, and Rayven Holmes for continuing to keep the youth of CVUU engaged.

Sally Daniel, Lisa Kilczewski, Kate Parsons, Robyn Thomas, and Mark Fetterly for the continued work on the playground project.
